Living wage in Grande Prairie rises by 15 per cent

Nov 12, 2025 | 4:43 PM

The Alberta Living Wage Network has released updated living wages for 21 municipalities across the province, including Grande Prairie.

The Network says 15 of those communities saw their wages increased in 2025 due in part to changes in childcare, shelter and transportation costs, demonstrating that life is becoming more difficult to afford in Alberta.

In Grande Prairie the living wage rose by 15.6 per cent to $21.80/hr.

Jasper has the highest living wage of 2025 at $31.80/hr, while Medicine Hat had the lowest at $18.15/hr.

According to the Network, the province’s minimum wage of $15.00/hr only covers 50 to 80 per cent of what’s required to live in Alberta.

The Office of the Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration has issued a statement following the Network’s release:

With affordable housing, one of the lowest provincial income tax rates in the country, no provincial sales tax, and limitless opportunities, Alberta continues to be the best place in Canada to live, work, invest and raise a family. We’re building on that advantage and helping Albertans keep more of their hard-earned dollars by delivering on our promise to cut taxes – saving individual Albertans an average of $750 or $1,500 for a two-income household.

Our government is also taking an approach that balances the needs of Alberta’s workforce, while ensuring businesses are not burdened with higher costs that put their staff’s employment at risk, particularly among youth and other entry-level workers. This includes focusing on real solutions to youth unemployment through the new Alberta Youth Employment Incentive.
