NDP Shadow Minister calls for “independent third party review” of Fairview campus closure

Nov 13, 2025 | 6:00 AM

With NWP annoucning the closure of its Fairview Campus after this school year, NDP Shadow Minister for Advanced Education David Eggen has issued a statement.

He joins Fairview Mayor Gordon MacLeod and community residents in wanting to keep the campus open:

“For more than 70 years, Fairview Campus has been a pillar of post-secondary education in Alberta, opening doors for students and supporting the local economy.
“Regional campuses matter. They don’t just educate students; they help keep talent in the community, which strengthens local businesses and families. But right now, many of these campuses are facing an uncertain future after years of cuts. This couldn’t come at a worse time. Demand for post-secondary education has never been higher. More Albertans are enrolled than ever before, and even more are looking for a place to study.
“Since 2019, Alberta’s colleges, universities, and polytechnics have endured unprecedented cuts under this UCP government—nearly half a billion dollars slashed from provincial funding. These decisions have put rural campuses at risk across the province.
“Rural colleges will be watching closely for government action to keep Fairview Campus open. This decision must be reviewed by an independent third party, including a full financial audit. The UCP government must commit to meaningful action to prevent this closure and protect access to education for rural Albertans.”

Currently, town members have started an effort to keep the campus open past its summer 2026 closure date, which included a townhall put on by concerned citizens.
