Storm split games on the road and other local sports action from weekend

Grande Prairie Storm

The AJHL’s Grande Prairie Storm split a pair of games on the road over the weekend.

On Saturday, the boys lost 5-4 to the Bonnyville Pontiacs, but redeemed themselves Sunday in a 4-3 shootout win over the Lloydminster Bobcats.

The Storm’s next game is at home Friday, Nov. 21 hosting the Canmore Eagles. Puck drop is 7:00 p.m. at Bonnetts Energy Centre.

North West Junior Hockey League

Six games played over the weekend in the Strike Group NWJHL.

On Friday:

  • The Sexsmith Vipers hosted Dawson Creek, where the Kodiaks won in overtime 4-3.
  • The County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings lost on the road in Beaverlodge 6-3 to the Blades.
  • The Fairview Flyers were shutout 11-0 by the Fort St. John Huskies.

On Saturday, the Blades hosted Dawson Creek and beat the Kodiaks 7-3. The Flyers lost their game against the North Peace Navigators 5-4.

The lone game on Sunday went to shootout, where the Huskies prevailed 5-4 over the Navigators.

There are two upcoming mid-week games on Wednesday, November 19. Fairview hosts the County Wheat Kings and the Navigators welcome Dawson Creek to Peace River. Puck drop for both games are 8:00 p.m.

Football

The road to the Alberta Bowl has come to a halt for Peace Region teams after quarter-finals playoff games on the weekend.

On Saturday in 4A playoffs, the #4 St. Joe’s Celtics fell to the #10 Austin O’Brien Crusaders 43-16.

On Saturday in the 9-a-side playoffs, the #2 Peace River Pioneers lost 38-22 to the #7 Millwoods Christian. The #6 Valleyview Cougars were defeated 34-6 by the #3 Wainwright Commandos.

In Mighty Peace action, provincials for Bantam Tier 1 9-a-side took place at CKC field Saturday, resulting in a provincial title for St. Paul, as they defeated the Grande Prairie Norsemen in a tight contest, 29-27.

All Peace Region teams are out of contention for their respective provincial championship.
