City of Dawson Creek working to finalize overland water transfer

Nov 21, 2025 | 11:00 AM

The City of Dawson Creek has given an update regarding efforts to address their prolonged drought.

Dawson Creek has been under a State of Local Emergency since mid-October to ensure access to provincial resources as the community faces escalating water challenges.

The city has applied for a short-term use application to temporarily transfer water from the Peace River to the Dawson Creek Water system using overland hoses laid along highway corridors.

The city team is currently working to complete the permitting process for the water transfer to take place in early 2026 if needed.

Recent snowfalls have improved water flow in the Kiskatinaw River enough to meet the lowered Total City Demand for daily water use and provide short-term stability, but water levels are still lower than previous years, and the river has already begun to freeze.

Dawson Creek is currently listed under Stage 3 water conservation measures, and residents are encouraged to conserve water where possible.
