Province announces new Assistant Chief Justice for the North Region

A Slave Lake judge is the new Assistant Chief Justice for the North Region of the Alberta Court of Justice.

Robert Marceau was named to the post by the province on Wednesday.

A release announcing the appointment says this is being done “to support court capacity and improve access to justice for Albertans living in the north.”

Marceau has served as a justice since 2018 and was a criminal lawyer in Peace River for the previous 20 years.

“The Alberta Court of Justice is pleased to welcome Justice Marceau as the next Assistant Chief Justice for the Northern Region. His thoughtful approach and commitment to justice will continue to serve the Court and Albertans well. I extend my sincere appreciation to Assistant Chief Justice Andrea Chrenek for her many years of outstanding service and her contributions to strengthening access to justice in northern Alberta and to the court as a whole,” says Alberta Court of Justice Chief Justice James Hunter in that same release.

Marceau will replace Chrenek, a Grande Prairie-based justice, who is retiring at the end of this year.

Chrenek was appointed to the post late in 2023 for what was originally a five-year term.
