Investigation into fire at Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market ongoing

A structure fire has left the Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market closed indefinitely.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Friday, the Grande Prairie Fire Department arrived on the scene of a structure fire in the area of 101 St. and 101 Ave., finding smoke and flames coming from the upper area of the structure.

Fire Chief Mark VanWerkoven says around 25 firefighters, six heavy apparatuses, and 2 support apparatuses were deployed to combat the fire, concluding their efforts around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

VanWerkoven says the cause of the fire and the full extent of the damages are still under investigation.

He’s calling the fire at the Market, which has been a Grande Prairie staple for over 40 years, devastating, and the responders understood the market’s importance to the community and did their best to protect it.

The Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market has been a community staple since 1974 and has operated out of their current building since 2004.

The Grande Prairie Farmers’ Market Society has secured a space to continue running the market in the interim; more details are expected soon.
