Grande Prairie city council highlights

Nov 25, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Grande Prairie city council met on Monday afternoon (Nov. 24).

Potential Budget Surplus

Administration says that as of the end of September, the city was looking at a potential budget surplus of $3.45 million. Savings on insurance premiums and recovering some election costs accounted for $399,000. More development activity, applications for subdivisions, and multi-family project permits came in at $738,000. The biggest shortfall was $380,000 for some unexpected repairs at the Eastlink Centre and other facilities. Electricity for streetlights also cost more than expected.

Police Service Funding

Council approved transferring $643,363.25 to the Grande Prairie Police Service 2026 Operating Budget. This will be used to set up a new Records Management System. Police Service officials say this is needed to become operationally ready for when the service becomes Grande Prairie’s full-time police force. This system will also tie in with other police systems; like body cameras.

By-law Reintroduction

Council asked administration to bring back a by-law that would see the establishment of a Housing & Homelessness Advisory Committee. Council also asked that the Community Advisory Board on Housing & Homelessness be consulted. The new group would include two city councillors, plus people from various community groups. Mayor Jackie Clayton says she would like to see the council members only serve a one-year term.

Council Representation

City Council made Councillor Brian Peterson the County of Grande Prairie representative on the Grande Prairie Library Board.

Council will gather for 2026 budget deliberations Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Nov. 26-28). The next regular council meeting is set for December 8. That will be the last council meeting of 2025.
