City Hall budget talks wrap up, potential tax increase of 4.34 per cent

Nov 27, 2025 | 3:30 PM

City Hall budget talks wrapped up Thursday afternoon after originally being expected to continue into Friday.

The proposed tax increase for 2026 is 4.34 per cent. That breaks down to 2.42 per cent for city operations and 1.92 per cent for the transition to the new Grande Prairie Police Service.

Those numbers were 5.78 per cent for the city and 2.66 per cent for the police service at the start of talks.

At the end of deliberations, Mayor Jackie Clayton said that increasing taxes is never taken lightly by elected officials, but added that she thinks the city is still keeping things affordable.

The increase works out to $12 per month for the average $350,000 home.

The 2026 spending plan will go to the Dec. 8 council meeting for final approval.
