Accidental Criminal Record Check text sent to GP residents

The City of Grande Prairie says texts issued Dec. 2, claiming some residents had RCMP criminal record checks waiting to be picked up, were sent out in error.

Officials say the messages were sent to the city’s full notification list due to a selection mistake and were not the result of a security or privacy breach.

A follow-up text was issued, as the inaccurate text had prompted an increased call volume and stress on city phone systems, including the non-emergency line, Access GP, Community Knowledge Campus and Bonnetts Energy Centre.

The city apologizes for the confusion and says they will be taking steps to prevent this from happening again by strengthening their verification steps.
