The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) says its just hit a big milestone before the end of 2025.

Police say on Dec. 1, 2025, they had their first detachment shift fully staffed by GPPS officers deployed out of the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment.

GPPS has been integrated with the local RCMP since July 2024 and now one of four squads is fully city police.

Members of the GPPS working out of the RCMP detachment are supported by the Community Standards Unit, which was established in 2025 to address social disorder and traffic concerns, along with Grande Prairie Enforcement Services and Mobile Outreach.

Collaboratively, the teams have a community-focused approach to city safety and wellbeing.

GPPS Sergeant Walter Kubrak said in a news release; “As we take on more responsibility through the policing transition, our priority remains the same: providing consistent, community-focused policing and ensuring the people of Grande Prairie feel safe and supported.”

Heading into 2026, the GPPS has 54 sworn officers and an additional 10 recruits in training and set to graduate in March 2026. The service plans to have 110 officers full-time when they take over city jurisdiction.
