Highlights from Monday’s meeting of Grande Prairie City Council

Dec 8, 2025 | 8:10 PM

Grande Prairie City Council held its last meeting of 2025 on Monday. Besides the approval of the 2026 budget, some other things were discussed. Those included the following:

Inclusivity and programming for intellectual disabilities

Council asked administration to bring a report back to a standing committee with recommendations on ways to boost inclusivity and programming for people with intellectual disabilities.

The report would look at what is offered now, what is missing, and the cost.

This came after a delegation from Inclusion Grande Prairie asked council to bring in a clear policy that it hopes will lead to what it calls “more meaningful and equitable participation in recreational programming for those with Intellectual Disabilities.”

Boulevard Naturalization Pilot Program

Council approved some recommendations from the Boulevard Naturalization Pilot Program.

That includes continuing the project along 84 Avenue south of Canfor and along 116 Avenue, north of Crystal Heights.

The report also recommends going back to regular mowing along Resources Road.

Many residents in that area had complained about problems with weeds and rodents.

City administration says in a report that the project worked best along 84 Avenue, as being close to an existing tree stand meant more trees started in this area, as did wild plants like goldenrods.

The pilot project ran for the last three summers.

Grande Prairie Storm presentation

The captain and assistant captains of the Grande Prairie Storm presented the mayor and councillors with their own personalized Storm sweaters (pictured).

There are the special edition jerseys that mark the Storm’s 30th anniversary in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Council will reconvene in the new year. The first meeting 2026 is set for January 5.
