FireSmart work to begin in “early December”

Dec 10, 2025 | 10:37 AM

The City of Grande Prairie says Firesmart vegetation management work will begin in the coming weeks.

The City says they received two grants, with the first focusing on “reducing flammable materials, improving defensible space and enhancing firefighter access in areas identified as higher risk along the corridor,” thanks to of the Intact Municipal Climate Resiliency Grant.

The second is “funded through the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) and includes the development of fireguard trails to improve firefighter access in South Bear Creek Park.”

The City says this project will begin in early-December, between South Bear Creek Park, north to 97 Avenue, and the Firebreak near Bear Creek and the Aquatera Treatment plant.

Residents residing in the area should expect equipment noise, temporary access restrictions and an increased volume of workers.
