Majority of northern Alberta under cold warning

Dec 11, 2025 | 6:39 AM

UPDATE: The cold warnings have now expanded to include the City and County of Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge, Wembley and Sexsmith. The wind chill could be close to -40.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for cold in most of northern Alberta today (Thursday, Dec. 11).

This weather alert covers the top half of the province, stemming at the Alberta-B.C. border near Demmitt and straight east across towards Highway 63.

Wind chill temperatures are expected to be between minus 40 and 45. The cold will moderate in some areas on Friday afternoon, but return Friday night.

The national weather office says Saturday should be warmer.

They suggest dressing for the weather and having the outside layer of clothing be wind resistant.

Frostbite is also a risk and can develop in just minutes. Please cover up exposed skin when outside for any period of time.

If it is too cold outside for yourself, then it is also too cold for your pets to stay outside.
