Cold Warning

Wind chill to reach -40 in Grande Prairie Monday

Dec 22, 2025 | 10:23 AM

Environment Canada has issued a yellow cold warning for the Peace Region on Monday, Dec. 22.

Wind chill values are expected to reach -40 or lower in the morning and early evening.

This weather alert affects the areas surrounding Grande Prairie, including the County of Grande Prairie, and north towards High Level.

The national weather office says extreme cold puts everybody at risk, especially young children, elderly, those with chronic illnesses, those working outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, and even faster with wind chill.

Please watch for cold related symptoms such as: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, and numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Anyone travelling south for the holidays should also be aware of a snowfall warning in effect for central Alberta.

Environment Canada says 10-20 cm is expected on Christmas Eve, with snowfall tapering off by Christmas Day.

The weather office says residents should prepare for winter driving conditions and potentially adjust travel plans.

Anyone on the roads can stay up to date with highway conditions using 511 Alberta.
