Cold warning for northern Alberta, central Alberta to get up to 20cm of snow

Dec 23, 2025 | 6:35 AM

Environment Canada as issued a plethora of weather alerts for the province.

Northern Alberta Wind Chill

The national weather office has issued a yellow cold warning for the top half of the province, north of Grande Prairie.

Wind chill values of -40 and lower are expected this morning (Tuesday, Dec. 23).

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Please cover up when out in the elements as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Central Alberta Snowfall

Anyone travelling south for the holidays should also be aware of a snowfall warning in effect for central Alberta.

Environment Canada says 10-20 cm is expected on Christmas Eve (Wednesday, Dec. 24), with snowfall tapering off by Christmas Day (Thursday, Dec. 25).

The weather office says residents should prepare for winter driving conditions and potentially adjust travel plans.

Anyone on the roads can stay up to date with highway conditions using 511 Alberta.
