Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Wiebe named in more recall petitions

Dec 23, 2025 | 12:05 PM

Elections Alberta has issued three more recall petitions in the province.

The new petitions are for two UCP backbenchers; Grande Prairie-Wapiti’s Ron Wiebe and Cypress-Medicine Hat’s Justin Wright, and the opposition NDP’s labour critic Edmonton Beverly-Clareview’s Peggy Wright.

The total number of recall petitions for provincial politicians in Alberta is now 26. Twenty-four of those are United Conservative party members and two are NDP members.

More than half of Danielle Smith’s 47-member caucus are on the chopping block with recall petitions.

In the case of Grande Prairie-Wapiti’s constituency, petitioner applicant Deborah Harris will have just three months to collect 11,921 signatures between Dec. 24, 2025 and Mar. 23, 2026, to trigger a constituency-wide vote on wether Wiebe keeps his seat. If he loses, a by-election would need to be held.

Harris, the petition filer, gave reasoning on her actions to recall Wiebe. It can be read below:

MLA Ron Wiebe voted for Bill 2, which invoked the notwithstanding clause to suspend teachers’ Charter rights, including the freedoms of expression, assembly and association. He supported passing all three readings in one day, limiting debate and preventing meaningful consultation with constituents. He endorsed an unnecessary and extreme override of constitutional rights that directly harms workers and undermines public trust. An MLA’s duty is to defend the rights of the people they represent, not to strip them away. Because his vote violates this core responsibility, this recall petition is being initiated. –Deborah Harris statement

MLA Wiebe responded to the recall petition by sending Elections Alberta’s CEO Gordon McClure a letter. It can be read below:

I was elected in 2023 with a strong mandate on a UCP platform, and I recognize that nearly 25% of voters supported other parties. That’s democracy, and I respect the opportunity for people to disagree. I also respect the recall process and welcome the opportunity to defend my record as your MLA. My commitment remains clear: to serve Grande Prairie-Wapiti with integrity and diligence for as long as voters entrust me as their representative. –MLA Ron Wiebe response

Grande Prairie’s Nolan Dyck is also under the same fire, with a recal petition being issued for him in November.
