Snowfall amounts surpass last year by almost 50 cms

Jan 2, 2026 | 6:00 AM

December in the Peace region saw a lot of snow, which meant a lot of shovelling for local residents.

Increased amounts of snowfall affected many aspects of life, with snow removal being delayed, ski hills closed, vehicle recovery services having wait times of over three days and even a province-wide alert not to travel from Alberta RCMP.

According to data collected by Canada Weather Stats, Grande Prairie saw 83 cm of snow over the course of the month.

However, that does fall short of the December overall record set at 127.4 cm back in 2013, or the overall snow record of 220 cm accumulating over 27 days between Dec., 2019 and Jan. 2020.

Compared to last year, the City saw almost 50 cm more snow, as snowfall amounts in Dec., 2024 were 35.2 cm.

Now, snow removal operations are in full effect in both the City and County, with temporary parking bans in effect.
