Alberta-born GP Storm alumni makes cut for Team Canada

Jan 4, 2026 | 7:00 AM

With Hockey Canada’s 2026 Olympic Men’s Hockey roster announcement, 25 players were selected to don the Maple Leaf, and among those 25 was a Grande Prairie Storm alumni.

Washington Capitals netminder Logan Thompson was a part of the Storm during the 2014-15 campaign, where he suited up for 22 games.

Thompson was a controversial snub for last year’s Four Nations squad after having one of his best seasons, winning 31 of his 43 starts to help his Washington Capitals win the Metro division and have the most points in the east, finishing the year with 111.

Now, he received the honours after posting a .915 save percentage through 29 games this season in DC, earning 15 wins.

Grande Prairie Storm Head Coach Chris Schmidt discussed the impact that makes on local youth playing hockey, aswell as guys who come through the Storm program.

“It’s pretty cool that kids can actually see, obviously it’s not going to happen for every kid that comes through and plays for the Grande Prairie Storm that there going to play in the NHL, but it’s certainly a great thing to see that it can happen, and I think once you see that it can happen, if I’m a kid it’s ‘why not me? Why am I not the next one that makes it.’ It’s obviously year’s down the road, but why can’t it be anyone of these kids that makes that jump.”

Schmidt adds that his coaching staff will try to continue that tradition of helping players become better people and move on to the next level.

Canada will kick off international play in February.
