City officials speak on snow removal

City officials say Priority 1 roads in Grande Prairie should have all the snow removed sometime today (Tuesday, January 6).

The city’s Brian Glavin says work continues to get windrows off Priority 2 roads.

“In some cases, we have to remove the windrow before we can complete the blading to create yet another windrow, which then, we’ll come back for again.”

“We’re having some issues just with storage, narrow roads, parking, getting buses through, so right now, it’s ensuring that those roads are passable.”

Mayor Jackie Clayton says residential snow clearing has been continuing except for one day over Christmas.

She adds that “snow removal has been a continual work in progress.”

“Our crews on Priority 1’s are working 24/7. Our contractors, who are doing primarily residential, have given us any extra hours and availability that they all have.”

“They also have contracts with other people, so they’re working for us as much as is possible.”

Glavin says some roads are still icy after the rain in late December, and that more ice control using things like salt will be done.

He adds this past December was the third-snowiest December in the last 50 years, and the seventh-snowiest month over the same time.

Glavin says the snow removal budget for 2025 should be O.K

“We had a lighter amount of snow last January through April. We should be O.K. as far as the snow budget (goes).”

“Ultimately, the snow budget is something that, if we do go over what’s allocated, that is why we have the Financial Stabilization Reserve.”

Clayton is encouraging people in Grande Prairie to sign up for snow removal updates.

She is also encouraging people to drive according to the road conditions and to not travel if it is not necessary.

Clayton is also asking people to call 311 if they see issues that need to be looked after.
