Curling provincials underway in Okotoks

Games got underway Monday night at the men’s and women’s curling provincials in Okotoks

The Daylen Vavrek rink from Sexsmith opened with a 5-4 win Tuesday morning over Edmonton’s Zach Davies.

Meanwhile, the Peter Hlushak rink from Edmonton that advanced from a qualifier in Grande Prairie opened with a 9-8 loss to Calgary’s Darren Moulding Tuesday morning.

The Hlushak rink includes local curler Varyk Doepker at second. They next play Wednesday afternoon at 1:30.

There are no teams from the Peace playing on the women’s side, but there are two that advanced from a qualifier held in Grande Prairie.

St. Albert’s Leslie Hammond beat Edmonton’s Amanda Sluchinski 8-6 Tuesday morning.

Edmonton’s Michelle Hartwell opened with a 10-3 loss to Edmonton’s Krysta Hilker Monday night.

Alberta’s Brier and Scotties representatives will be decided on Sunday.
