Wednesday local sports: Curling provincials update, NWJHL, ski hills, football update

Curling

Daylen Vavrek’s rink from Sexsmith is 2-0 and into the A Event semi-finals at the Alberta men’s curling provincials in Okotoks.

Vavrek beat Edmonton’s Johnson Tao 6-3 Tuesday night. He will play Kevin Koe Wednesday evening.

The Jacob Libbus rink will play the Evan Van Amsterdam team in the other A semi. Both are from Edmonton. Dawson Creek’s Jason Ginter is the second on the Van Amsterdam team.

Both the men’s and women’s A Event semi-finals will start at 6:30 p.m.

In the women’s provincials, also taking place in Okotoks, Selena Sturmay will play Gracelyn Richards, and Myla Plett takes on Serena Gray-Withers. All four rinks are from Edmonton.

Peter Hlushak’s team, with Varyk Doepker at second, is playing Tao Wednesday afternoon in a B Event game.

NWJHL

There are two games Wednesday night in the Northwest Junior Hockey League.

Sexsmith visits Beaverlodge while Fort St. John travels to Dawson Creek.

Both of those games will start at 8 p.m.

Ski Hills

Nitehawk ski hill is open Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 9:30. The Tube Zone will be closed Wednesday night.

Fairview Ski Hill is open from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Misery Mountain is open from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday,

Football

The South beat the North 19-13 in the 35th Annual Senior Bowl High School All-Star Game, held in Calgary over the weekend by Football Alberta.

The North team included seven players from St. Joe’s and Sexsmith Secondary, plus two other Mighty Peace Football League players from Fort McMurray.

A local spokesperson says all the MPFL guys, except one, are in the picture below, and that #24 is from Bonnyville, but a token Grande Prairie player.
