27th Peace Country Beef Congress set for Friday, Saturday

Jan 9, 2026 | 6:00 AM

The 27th Peace Country Beef Congress will be held Friday and Saturday (January 9 and 10) at Evergreen Park.

Congress president Colby Klassen says around 100 head will be entered in the cattle shows.

“I think, as a whole, (entries) are up a little bit. The junior side of things is up by quite a bit. and the purebred side of things would be down just a little bit.”

“I think (the) total number of cattle coming is, probably, just about as high as we’ve had for a while.”

Klassen explains why we are seeing these trends.

“For the purebred side of things, just the timing is a little bit off, I guess. Everybody is busy (with) calving and getting ready for their bull sales. It’s just a timing matter.”

“For the junior side of things, the junior programs have really taken off up north here. I guess you could say we’re finally starting to catch up with the south and central regions.”

Klassen says it is exciting to see young people wanting to be involved in agriculture.

“There’s a lot of excitement for these young kids, and I guess it probably helps with the cattle prices and whatnot, too.”

“There’s just a lot of enthusiasm coming, and we’ve seen it from each year. I’d say over the last five years, we’ve just seen it, where you see the same kids come back year after year and the growth they’ve had over the past few years.”

Klassen says cattle prices were the highest a lot of ranchers had ever seen last fall.

A lot of the purebred producers that are showing cattle also have cows calving at home.

Congress president Colby Klassen says that someone will usually stay home while someone else comes to the show.

The warmer weather will also help with calving.

“For a lot of the producers, these next two weeks are probably our busiest time for calving, so it couldn’t have warmed up at a better time.”

Klassen says the show is open to anyone who wants to come.
