Grande Prairie Legion hoping to have new mural, painted crosswalks this spring

Jan 11, 2026 | 8:19 AM

The Grande Prairie Legion hopes to soon have a new mural set up on the west side of its building downtown.

President Dean Langton says they received 20 submissions after putting out a call for these in September.

“We actually chose Tim Heimdal because he’s done so many murals in this town, and we think his vision will coincide with ours,” he said.

“Now, we’re just waiting for him, and we’ll figure it out, start that in April.”

Langton says the mural will go “under and above” the lettering on the west side of the building.

“With luck, he’ll be able to do all of his muraling in his studio, and we’ll just attach panels to the side of the building, which, I think, it’s the way to go,” added Langton.

The Legion also wants to have two painted crosswalks on 101 Avenue – at 99 and 100 Streets, and they would be red and white.

“We just haven’t come up with the design yet,” Langton said. “We had the design; we’re working with the city on that.”

“Hopefully, we’ll re-submit in March, and we’ll have (them) done (by) the end of March, middle of April.”

Langton says they don’t want any writing as it will distract drivers, and they can’t include a poppy because it is disrespectful to walk on poppies. He adds that a fallen soldier silhouette may be one idea.

Langton says they have rejected “five or six” ideas and still have “four or five” others they are considering.

He adds they hope to have both projects finished this spring.
