County of Grande Prairie to conduct wildfire mitigation work in Wapiti Nordic Area

The County of Grande Prairie is set to begin wildfire mitigation work in the Wapiti Nordic area later this month.

Trail users can expect some temporary closures as crews treat nearly 17 hectares of public forested land.

The crews will be working to reduce natural fuel sources by thinning and pruning trees, harvesting select timber, removing deadfall and mulching debris.

The work is set to begin Jan. 19 and go until March 31.

Crews will begin work in Areas 2 and 3, public land leased for recreation use by the Wapiti Public Ski Club.

Work in Area 4, a 5.19-hectare site that will serve as a long-term fireguard, will begin Jan. 26, weather permitting.
