Grande Prairie Police Service moving closer to full transition date

Jan 21, 2026 | 2:00 PM

The Grande Prairie Police Service is reflecting on their progress as they near their goal of becoming the police of jurisdiction for the City of Grande Prairie.

Only nine months remain until the service completes their transition in late October 2026, a full two years ahead of schedule.

Since establishing in 2023, GPPS has developed its own in-house training program and sworn in a total of 54 officers, soon to be 70 with the impending graduation of their third Recruit Class and sixth Experienced Officer program in March.

42 officers are currently positioned at the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment, including assignments to the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams and Caribou Child & Youth Centre.

“Our progress speaks for itself,” says Grande Prairie Police Service Chief Dwayne Lakusta. “We are exceeding timelines, delivering strong operational results, and building a modern, community-focused police service grounded in fiscal responsibility. Grande Prairie is demonstrating that a municipal transition can be executed successfully while enhancing public safety and public trust.”

Officials say municipal officers will be fully policing the City of Grande Prairie by Oct. 21, 2026.
