The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie is celebrating a milestone today (Thursday, Jan. 22), over seven decades in the making.

The club celebrates 75 years of service, founded by nine original members on Jan. 22, 1951.

According to Rotary, during their time in the City, they have contributed over $12 million to “projects supporting health care, housing, youth programs, food security, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.”

They also put a spotlight on some of their “key legacy initiatives:”

  • Packaging more than 282,000 meals through food-building projects such as Rise Against Hunger
  • Working with Habitat for Humanity to help build four homes in Grande Prairie
  • Leading the Clean-a-Thon and Green-a-Thon, removing more than 236,000 pounds of garbage in a single community-wide effort
  • More than 70 years of support for 577 Air Cadets and decades of involvement in Rotary Youth Exchange
  • Operating the Rotary Campground since 1973, with 100% of net proceeds reinvested into community initiatives

Patricia Gibson, President of the club says during their time in the City, “Rotary has brought people together to make a meaningful difference. Our strength has always been our partnerships, our volunteers, and a shared commitment to service that benefits both our local community and the wider world.”

Despite the anniversary, Rotary says they “remain focused on the future—continuing to strengthen the community through leadership, partnership, and service above self.”
