Life sentence in a murder case

Alberta Justice says a man convicted of murder has been given a life sentence, with no chance at parole for 11 years.

Daniel Lane Cardinal was sentenced January 19 in Peace River court. He had been found guilty on February 19, 2025.

Cardinal was arrested after the shooting death of 22-year-old Emilio Noskey on October 4, 2022, on the Woodland Cree First Nation.

Peace Regional RCMP said at the time that Noskey died on the scene of the shooting.

Cardinal was arrested four days after the shooting.

Preliminary hearing set in murder case

Alberta Justice says a preliminary hearing in a murder case from Atikameg will be held in December.

The hearing for Rodney Derek Nahachick of Atikameg First Nation will be held December 7 to 11, 2026, in High Prairie court.

He and a youth who was 15 at the time were arrested after the December 20, 2024, death of 26-year-old Christian Mitchell.

High Prairie RCMP said at the time they were called out to a wooded area at Atikameg for “a deceased male with suspicious injuries.”

Nahachick and the youth were arrested on July 25, 2025.

Stolen vehicle investigation leads to time served sentence.

Alberta Justice says a stolen vehicle case has led to a 90 day time served sentence for one of the two people charged.

Quinton Di Guistini pleaded guilty to charges of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and failure to comply with a release order on January 14 in Grande Prairie court. Another failure to comply charge was withdrawn. His sentence was deemed served based on time already spent in custody.

Di Guistini was one of two people arrested on November 13, 2025, after someone called police, saying they had seen a stolen truck.

Mounties stopped the truck with a tire deflation device and arrested two people who tried to run away.

This led to a search of a property in the County of Grande Prairie, where more vehicles and other property police said were stolen and recovered.

Charges against the second person charged, Duane Korbyn Pilgrim, were withdrawn.

In September of last year, Di Guistini was also given 120 days in jail, minus 105 days credit for time already spent in custody, on the same charges in a separate arrest.

Charges withdrawn in theft of mail case

Alberta Justice says charges have been withdrawn in a theft of mail case.

All the charges against Vanessa Jordan were withdrawn on January 13 in Grande Prairie court.

Grande Prairie RCMP said at the timeon November 15, 2024, a traffic stop led to the discovery of mail and identity documents that did not belong to the person driving the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle also turned up break-in tools.

Jail sentence after shots fired arrest

Alberta Justice says the accused in a shots fired investigation has pleaded guilty to charges of flight from a peace officer and resisting a peace officer.

Rodney Conrad Ominayak of Little Buffalo entered the guilty pleas January 13 in Peace River court. He was given a sentence of 180 days in jail, minus 90 days credit for time already spent in custody.

He was arrested after an incident on July 13, 2025.

Peace River RCMP say they got a report of shots being fired at a vehicle, and that a firearm had also been pointed at the people inside. The suspect and the people in the vehicle knew each other.

Public sightings of the suspect led to an arrest being made without incident.

Ominayak had been given 60 days time served on January 7 after pleading guilty to charges of operating a vehicle while prohibited and flight from a peace officer. Some other charges, including dangerous operation of a vehicle, were withdrawn.

Several other charges, including uttering threats and pointing a firearm, were dismissed.
