County appoints 2026 Farm Family

The County of Grande Prairie has announced their 2026 Farm Family.

The Kitt family is a second-generation farm family being recognized for pairing nearly a century of learning with long-standing practices, built on a commitment to healthy soil, good food, and a strong community.

Jerry Kitt, his son Donovan and daughter-in-law Lisa, own and operate First Nature Farms and The Homestead, two separate farming businesses operated together on roughly 3,000 acres of deeded and leased land.

“People would come up at the farmers market and thank me for being a farmer, for producing good food,” Jerry says. “That feeling never leaves you. We just try to grow good food and feed good people.”

The Kitts raise beef cattle, pigs, and chickens, and grow vegetables and garlic and microgreens that are purchased through local markets, subscriptions, and farm-to-table events.

Soil health is a major factor in the Kitt’s decision making.

“Healthy soil makes healthy plants, healthy animals, and healthy people,” Lisa says. “We need to put the culture back into agriculture. Food creates community, and we see that every day on the farm.”

The Kitts will be honoured at the County’s Farm Family Banquet March 13.

The County will be celebrating the Kitt family in March as part of the Peace County Classic Agri-show.
