City Council approves zoning changes to allow new trades training centre

Feb 3, 2026 | 12:00 AM

Grande Prairie City Council held a very short meeting on Monday (Feb. 2).

The lone item of business was council approving zoning changes to allow Northwest Polytechnic to establish trades program training in a former vehicle dealership on 100 Avenue in the Gateway area.

An educational facility would not have been allowed under the previous zoning. There were no objections from the public to the change.

City officials say the change from commercial to public service zoning will cost the city $130,000 in property tax revenue.

NWP announced in December it had purchased the building and that it would become home to the Skilled Trades Training Centre.

The first apprenticeship intakes are set for this fall.
