Feb 3, 2026 | 12:32 PM

A junior hockey team has confirmed that three of its members died in a collision.

Southern Alberta Mustangs Junior Hockey has announced that a collision on Monday, Feb. 2, took the lives of three of its players.

The Claresholm RCMP says, at 11:00 a.m., they responded to a report of a collision between a semi-truck pulling gravel and a small passenger vehicle.

It occurred at the intersection of Highway 2 and 55 Avenue, at the north entrance to Stavely.

The hockey team says it happened while they were travelling to a team practice.

All three occupants in the vehicle died on scene, including two 18-year-old men from Kamloops, B.C., and a 17-year-old boy from Alabama.

The Mustangs say, “There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief. These young men were more than hockey players – they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends, and deeply loved members of our Mustangs family and the communities we call home.”

The team adds that their hearts are with the families, friends, billet families, teammates, coaches, and everyone who loved them. They are working closely with the authorities and aim to support their players, staff and families.

The Mustangs are a junior hockey team based out of Stavely, approximately 15 kilometres north of Claresholm.

The club is asking that the public respect the privacy of the impacted families and that compassion be shown.

A 40-year-old man from Stavely, who was driving the semi, received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

There is currently no word on potential criminal charges.
