Beef industry groups worried about AAFC research cuts

Two beef industry groups have joined those raising concerns about proposed cuts at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

The Beef Cattle Research Council and the Canadian Cattle Association say they are concerned about possible closures of three research stations, including the one in Lacombe.

A release from the two says the cuts will have far-reaching impacts for cattle producers, the beef industry, consumers and Canada’s efforts to grow the economy and diversify export markets. They do acknowledge what the calls “fiscal pressures facing the federal government.”

That same release says the closures of the stations in Lacombe, Nappan, Nova Scotia and Quebec City will hurt research into forages, food safety and beef grading.

They ask that if the closures go ahead, some programs be moved to other stations, including the food safety work going to Lethbridge from Lacombe.
