One dead, six in serious condition in bus rollover on Highway 43

Grande Prairie RCMP have provided an update to the serious single motor vehicle collision on Highway 43 near Debolt on Saturday evening (Feb. 7).

Mounties say they responded to a report of a charter bus that had hit the median and rolled over back onto its wheels at approximately 10:27 p.m. EMS and fire service units also attended the scene, 1km west of Debolt.

Police say there were 37 passengers on the bus, including children and adults. Non-injured passengers were transported to Debolt Hall to stay warm and safe, and another bus was brought to transport 16 people to hospital with minor injuries. These 16 have all been checked and released.

Six passengers were taken to hospital in serious condition via ambulance. Their conditions are not known.

Unfortunately, a 50-year-old woman resident of Grande Prairie was declared deceased at the scene. RCMP send their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

A RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene and road conditions are believed to have been a factor. A freezing rain warning was issued for that area earlier in the evening.

Mounties have engaged local victim services as well as RCMP Victim and Family Liaison Officers. If anyone needs assistance after to this tragic event, please call your local RCMP. Resources are available to assist anyone during this difficult time.
