Lund’s Alberta anti-coal petition given go-ahead to start collecting signatures

Feb 10, 2026 | 4:15 PM

Country singer Corb Lund’s petition effort to outlaw new coal mining on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains has been given the official go-ahead to gather signatures.

The petition calls for the government to introduce legislation prohibiting any new coal mining activity in the area.

Lund will have four months until June 10 to collect just under 178,000 signatures.

If he’s successful, the Alberta legislature would then consider passing a coal mining ban or send the issue to a provincewide vote.

Lund has been a vocal opponent of new coal mining exploration and development.

He has said the majority of Albertans want to protect land and water in the area.
