Feb 10, 2026 | 4:38 PM

Update:

RCMP have confirmed ten people are dead after a shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.

The Police Emergency Alert Incident issued around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, has been cancelled.

Six people were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, and one person died on enroute to hospital.

Two more people were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the incident, but their exact relation to the suspect has not been determined.

Finally, the suspect, described in an earlier alert as a female in a dress with brown hair, was confirmed dead this afternoon from what was described as a “self-inflicted injury.”

Supt. Ken Floyd, Commander of the B.C. RCMP’s North District, says two people have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries while 25 people are being assessed for injuries at the local medical centre.

Floyd says RCMP are currently unable to confirm any connections between the suspect and the school.

He adds multiple layers of support are planned for Tumbler Ridge’s community, students and teachers, as well as the front line workers who responded to this event.

B.C. Premier David Eby has offered his condolences.

School District 59 has announced in response to this event Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School will be closed for the rest of the week.

The Peace River Regional District has cancelled their regular board meeting for Thursday, Feb. 12, 2026 to allow the communities surrounding the tragic incident in Tumbler Ridge time and opportunity to grieve.

The next scheduled meeting is on Feb. 26, 2026.

The District of Tumbler Ridge has released a statement following today’s (Tuesday, Feb. 10) emergency alert.

The District says, “our community experienced a deeply distressing incident. Our hearts are with all those affected, and we recognize that many residents may be feeling shocked, scared, and overwhelmed.”

Adding, “in the days ahead, we know this will be difficult for many to process. Please check in on one another, lean on available supports.”

BC RCMP have said they located what they believe is the original suspect, deceased, with the investigation now shifting to determine if there is a second.

The situation is “still unfolding,” and the district says to check BC RCMP platforms for updates.

Earlier this afternoon, an active shooter alert was issued by Tumbler Ridge RCMP and remains in place.

At 3:15 p.m. the alert went into effect, and residents residing in the area, including Beaverlodge and Hythe, were instructed to lock all doors, refrain from leaving their homes or business and shelter in place.

They also note not to attend school unless directed, and avoid the area if possible.
