GPPSD offering youth supports in the wake of a B.C. school shooting

Feb 11, 2026 | 12:41 PM

The Grande Prairie Public School Division is asking parents to check in with their child over the coming days, following a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, Feb. 10).

Police have now confirmed nine are deceased, while 25 are being assessed for a range of injuries.

In an email to parents from Charles Spencer High School Principal Jason Wall, he says even though this tragedy didn’t take place in our community, events like this can have a significant emotional impact on youth.

Wall suggests parents and guardians model “calmness and reassurance,” as youth often take emotional cues from adults around them.

He notes that school counsellors and support staff are always available to meet with students, and it is important to recognize that we all respond to news in different ways.

Addiotionally, the Alberta Teachers Association is sending their condolences to the community of Tumbler Ridge, saying “our hearts go out to the community of Tumbler Ridge during this time of unimaginable tragedy. We stand beside you in your grief and offer our deepest condolences.”

More updates on this ongoing development are expected.
