Holiest Month in Islam

Canadian Muslims mark the start of Ramadan

Feb 18, 2026 | 10:06 AM

Canadian Muslims are preparing to mark the start of Ramadan today.

But one thing will be new about the most festive and holiest month in Islam. For the first time in two decades, Canada’s approximately 1.8 million Muslims are marking the full month of Ramadan in winter.

Noor Al-Henedy is a spokesperson for Canada’s first mosque, the Al Rashid Mosque in Edmonton. She says Ramadan follows the lunar moon and shifts every year. And fewer daylight hours in winter mean less fasting.

Al Rashid Mosque is also planning to host its annual Ramadan feast in March in partnership with local non-profit groups. This year, members of the public are invited to eat halal burgers and hot dogs.

The Canadian Council of Imams says it also expects increased security at mosques across the country during Ramadan.
