New memorial to be unveiled at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday
Grande Prairie’s Veterans Memorial Park will host a special event to mark Black History Month on Saturday.
The day will include an unveiling of a memorial for the No. 2 Construction Battalion.
The group of all Black soldiers were not allowed to fight because of their skin colour but did serve by doing things like fixing roads and digging trenches, according to a page on the federal government’s website.
The Veterans Memorial Gardens says on its social media page that the 605 men in the battalion fought for the right to serve, facing discrimination, and were then forgotten.
