Treaty 8 Chief among Assembly of Treaty Chiefs passing vote of non-confidence for Alberta government

Mar 1, 2026 | 8:00 AM

The Assembly of Treaty Chiefs has unanimously passed a vote of non-confidence in the United Conservative Party Government of Alberta.

On behalf of Treaty 6, 7, and 8, the AOTC says Danielle Smith’s government has refused to respond appropriately to the current political atmosphere on Treaty territories.

They say that First Nations have no confidence in the Alberta government and claim the UCP has failed to meet the requirements of democratic oversight and a transparent legislative process.

“The UCP has repeatedly demonstrated to all Treaty people that it does not have the capacity to responsibly navigate the political instability resulting from the chaos Danielle Smith has created,” said Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi. “The growing climate of division and separation is a direct result of its failure to respect Treaty Rights, constitutional obligations, and the foundational relationship between First Nations and the Crown. Alberta deserves leadership grounded in accountability, stability, and respect for Treaty.”

The AOTC are now calling on members of the government, the NDP, or independent members of the Legislative Assembly to officially declare a vote of non-confidence for the current government.
