Walker hoping for one more trip to the Olympics

Beaverlodge curler Geoff Walker says watching the Milano Cortina Winter Games brought back some memories for him.

Walker won a bronze medal at the 2022 Winter Games as part of the Brad Gushue rink.

“When we were just watching it, seeing the rings, there’d be times when I flash back and remember some of the stuff that I was able to go through. (It) was very special.”

Walker says not having fans around in 2022 was “the biggest thing for us.”

“Not having the fans around and not being able to mingle with the other athletes. We didn’t have NHL hockey players there to be able to go and watch.”

“It’s still the Olympics. It’s a little different when you can’t have family and friends there supporting you, but it’s still the ultimate. I’ll always remember that the rest of my life and would love to get back to one more before I hang ’em up.”

His teammate from four years ago, Brett Gallant, won gold this year at the Milano Cortina games with the Brad Jacobs team.

“For sure, happy for him, with getting the bronze last time (and) just (being) able to bounce back from the mixed doubles.”

“I know they (Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman) would have been disappointed in the result in the mixed double competition, (to be) able to bounce back (and) get a gold, that’s an awesome achievement.”

Canada missed the medal round in mixed doubles.

Walker says the Milan Cortina Winter Games were a “fairly successful Olympics” for Team Canada.

“When you come away with a gold medal in any of the disciplines, I feel that is very successful for Curling Canada with the guys doing that. They went in as one of the medal favourites, so for them to come away (with a gold medal), it’s good for the sport and good for Canada.”

“(For) Rachel (Homan’s team) (to) battle the way they did and come out with the bronze (after) getting off to a tough start and (with the) pressure on her. It was very tough for her (and) to come out with a bronze was great.”

Walker and Team Gushue are at the Montana’s Brier in St. John’s, Newfoundland and have made the playoff round after going undefeated with an 8-0 record in the round robin and taking first place in their pool.
