County of Grande Prairie issues Water Advisory for Teepee Creek

The County of Grande Prairie is advising all residents of the Hamlet of Teepee Creek to avoid drinking the community’s tap water for the time being.

Officials say high levels of the nutrient manganese have been found in the water supply due to a filtration system failure.

While the nutrient is beneficial to humans in small amounts, the county says it can be harmful if consumed in larger quantities.

Officials say infants and children under five are in particular risk and should avoid swallowing the water whenever possible.

According to the county, showering, bathing, and washing with the water is safe, but the water should not be drunk or used for cooking or cleaning vegetables as it cannot be boiled.

The county says it is working to secure safe, potable water for Teepee Creek while repairs to the water filtration system are being completed.
