New trades-based charter school opening in Grande Prairie

Mar 17, 2026 | 12:22 PM

A new trades-focused public charter school is coming to Grande Prairie.

Based out of the former Harry Balfour School building, the Grande Prairie Technical Institute is a Grade 7-12 charter school focused on hands-on, skills-based learning and industry-connected trades programming.

The institute was founded by Karim and Noshaba Harji, and features four core trade pathways: Automotive Technology, Construction & Carpentry, Welding & Metal Fabrication, Culinary Arts & Commercial Kitchen Operations.

Noshaba Harji says GP Tech was crated to bridge the gap between traditional academics and real-world skills.

The school’s model blends applied experimental learning with the Alberta Education curriculum requirements and supports pathways under the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training framework.

Grande Prairie MLA Nolan Dyck says GP Tech will provide countless young people with a head start in establishing the skills they need to build a fulfilling and successful career in the traders.

Applications for the 2026-2027 year are now open.
