IIO investigating officer-involved shooting in Fort St. John

Mar 30, 2026 | 3:21 PM

British Columbia’s independent police watchdog is investigating after a man suffered life-threatening injuries in a shooting involving an officer during a traffic stop.

The Independent Investigations Office and the RCMP have confirmed that the shooting happened Sunday, just after 3 a.m. in Fort St. John.

Police say they made a traffic stop on the vehicle near 86 Street and 97 Avenue after determining one of the two occupants inside a pickup truck was believed to have outstanding warrants.

Mounties say someone exited the truck with a weapon, and an officer opened fire. Police say the man was hospitalized with serious, life-threatening injuries, while the officer was not hurt.

The Independent Investigations Office says the man was a passenger inside the truck, but no other details have been released.
