Local effort to bring new baseball team to Grande Prairie underway

Apr 5, 2026 | 6:00 AM

There is an effort underway to bring a AAA men’s baseball team to Grande Prairie.

The people behind the Grande Prairie Thundercats have put in a bid to join the Sunburst League.

Proponents of the team say in an email to EverythingGP that it would have a chance to play against Single-A farm teams of major-league organizations in the U.S.

The email also says that it is “within reason” that this could mean local players would end up playing in the minors down south.

The Thundercats would play their home games at the County of Grande Prairie Sportsplex if the application is granted.

The team is having a design created for its jerseys.

Tryouts and exhibition games will take place later in the spring.

Once a roster is put together, the application to join will go into the league.

The Sunburst League is a senior men’s AAA league that already has two teams each in Edmonton and Calgary, along with teams in Red Deer, Sherwood Park and St. Albert.
