Slow start to 2026 Peace Region wildfire season

Apr 9, 2026 | 6:00 AM

Wildfire season started last month (Mar. 1) across the province.

With the start of wildfire season, the Alberta government is reminding residents that fire permits are back in effect.

They are also cautioning residents about brush pile burning, as if not done properly, they could reignite and spread.

Residents are being reminded of safe burning practices:

  • Spread remaining ashes and debris.
  • Check the ground for any hot spots for any lingering ground fire.
  • Douse the area to fully extinguish the burn and stir ashes with heavy equipment or hand tools.
  • Ensure the area is cold to the touch.

As of Jan. 1, the Grande Prairie Forest Area has yet to have a wildfire, while the Peace River Forest Area has already seen two, but none remain active.
