BC Emergency Alert

Evacuation order issued for Old Fort, B.C., due to landslide

Apr 21, 2026 | 7:15 AM

The province of British Columbia issued an evacuation alert due to landslide risk late Monday night (April 20) for residents in Old Fort; a community situated along the banks of the Peace River, south of Fort St. John.

A slow moving landslide at the historic Old Fort slide prompted the evacuation order for the community of around 150 residents.

The alert was issued just before 7:30 p.m. on April 20, by the Peace River Regional District.

The only road into Old Fort has been closed, as access to the area is no longer considered safe.

Old Fort area residents were told to evacuate to the Pomeroy Sports Centre in Fort St. John. Those that chose to stay home were told that emergency services would not be provided since the road has been closed.

In 2018, a similar situation unfolded when a landslide knocked out the only road access in or out of the community.

Geotechnical teams are assessing the landslide area and will provide more information to authorities once available.

In their 11:20 p.m. update, EmergencyInfoBC says the landslide remains active and conditions may continue to change. Please check with EmergencyInfoBC for the most up to date information.
