Some elective surgeries being postponed at GPRH

Apr 27, 2026 | 10:06 AM

Alberta Heath Services says due to an issue with medical device reprocessing at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, some elective surgeries that are scheduled or pre-booked may be getting postponed.

The issue affects surgical instrument sterilization and the healthcare facility has made the decision to only use surgical instruments that have been reprocessed in Alberta’s capital until the issue is fixed.

Emergency surgeries are not being affected by this MDR issue and have remained available at all times.

AHS said in a news release sent out on Monday, April 27, that the GPRH expects the resumption of elective surgeries early this week.

Any surgeries that have been impacted by this MDR issue will be rescheduled as soon as possible. AHS says the decision to postpone any surgery are made in the interest of patient safety and ensuring the hospital can continue providing emergency surgeries.

The GPRH Emergency Department remains open and no other healthcare services at the facility are being impacted.
