Canfor reports first quarter loss

May 7, 2026 | 12:00 PM

Canfor is reporting an operating loss of $72.1 million for the first quarter of this year. Sales came in at $1.359 billion.

The operating loss for the same time a year ago was $28.5 million and $415.9 million for the last quarter of 2025.

Canfor says in a news release outlining the results that “global lumber remained challenging” over the quarter because of “subdued demand and ongoing trade and geopolitical pressures.”

Lower supplies led to some improved prices in the North American lumber market.

The lumber segment of the business still reported a $43.7 million operating loss in the first quarter.

Canfor says in that same release that what it calls “global trade flow disruptions,” like the war in Iran, will impact lumber markets around the world.

Lumber prices in North America are expected to be lower in the second quarter as the supply goes up after some improvement in prices.

Canfor owns a sawmill in Grande Prairie.
