Two search warrants leads to 40 charges on Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation

Valleyview RCMP with help from other agencies, executed two search warrants at a pair of properties on Tuesday, May 5, resulting in a combined 40 charges laid against four men.

On Tuesday, Valleyview Mounties, Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, Western Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit and other supporting units, searched two residences in Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

During the searches, they seized a number of items:

  • Firearms
  • Prohibited firearms
  • Prohibited weapons
  • Ammunition
  • 84 grams of cocaine
  • 214 grams of methamphetamine

Twenty-eight-year-old Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation resident, Dorian Harvey was arrested and had twelve charges laid against him:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Six counts of possession of a firearm contrary to order
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Tampering with serial number

Fourty-two-year-old Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation resident, Francis Soto was arrested on three charges:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Careless use of firearm
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition

Dexter Chowace, a 40-year-old Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation resident, was arrested and had three charges laid against him:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Two counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon

Eighteen-year-old Darcy Kappo, also of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, was arrested on ten charges:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Five counts of failure to comply with release order
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Tampering with serial number

Additionally, twelve more charges were laid stemming from an alleged separate incident on Friday, May 1.

Harvey had eight more charges laid:

  • Six counts of possession of firearm contrary to order
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Careless use of a firearm

Kappo had four additional charges:

  • two counts of failing to comply with a release order
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Careless use of a firearm

All four appeared before a Justice of the Peace with Kappo, Harvey, and Soto remanded into custody with a court date on May 7, 2026. Chowace was released with a court date set for May 21, 2026.
