Fire restriction now in effect for the City & County

May 9, 2026 | 8:01 AM

The City and County of Grande Prairie has upgraded its fire advisory from Tuesday, May 5, to a fire restriction.

As of 8:00 a.m. this morning (Saturday, May 9), a restriction was put into effect for the whole County, including Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley, due to recent and forecasted warm temperatures.

At this time, no new fire permits are being issued, and those already with a permit are asked to follow all safe burning practices and remain on site until the blaze is fully extinguished.

The County also asked residents to limit all burning to approved fire pits, burn barrels, or industrial bins, and is reminding everyone to never burn when winds reach or are forecast to reach 12 km/h or more.

In the City, residents are prohibited from using fireworks and any kind of open burning; burn barrels, campfires on public land, and smudge fires.

At this time, various types of propane and charcoal barbecue grills are still allowed in the City.

Residents wanting to help reduce wildfire risk are encouraged to check over any of their winter burn sites to see if they are fully extinguished, ensuring a winter holdover fire doesn’t lead to something bigger.

Anyone wanting more information on wildfire conditions, fire bans or safe burning practices can visit the County’s website.
