Grande Prairie and area celebrating International Museums Day

Grande Prairie’s museums are once again partnering up on Saturday, May 16, for the eighth annual International Museums Day.

Free admission for the day is being offered at:

  • Grande Prairie Museum and Heritage Village
  • Boreal Wetland Centre at Evergreen Park
  • Phillip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum
  • Art Gallery of Grande Prairie
  • Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre
  • South Peace Regional Archives

The facilities will also have special activities and features for the day, and a free shuttle service offered for anyone wanting to visit any spot on the list.

“International Museums Day was created by the International Council of Museums, who work with UNESCO to promote museums worldwide,” said Charles Taws, curator of the Grande Prairie Museum. “This day is a time to celebrate all our museums, and this year’s theme is ‘Museums in a Divided World.’ The Grande Prairie Museum is pleased to be partnering with other local historical institutions to help make this a memorable day for everyone.”

The Museum is hosting a new exhibit on the history of movie theatres in Grande Prairie, and Saturday is the first day Heritage Village will be open for the public for the 2026 season.

“We are thrilled to be part of International Museums Day,” said Linden Roberts, Executive Director of the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum. “This event gives everyone in our region the opportunity to explore paleontology and have fun learning about our unique, ancient natural history right here at home.”

Museum attendees will also have the chance to win a $300 prize basket by submitting an event passport from visiting the museums on Saturday.
